In a matter of hours, 2,000 union supporters joined the facebook group backing Derek Blackadder, the Canadian academic unionist, and won his reinstatement. Facebook members can friend me. Some of the How The University Works videos are circulating on facebook and have been used in courses in Australia and Germany. (Viewings on Youtube are around 14,000, with “Faculty on Food Stamps” and “Play PhD Casino!” the most popular.)
In a few days, I’ll be uploading a teaching guide for How The University Works. In brief, I designed the first 20 pages of the Introduction and all of Chapter 4 to be suitable for a general audience, including first-year college students and high school seniors. NYU Press has graciously made these sections of the book available in free downloadable pdf.
Later, I hope to announce a broad, international youtube teach-in on the issues raised by the global substitution of cheap student labor for faculty and staff jobs. Email me or leave a comment if you want to participate!
Special thanks for very kind mentions to lumpenprofessoriat (read the “survivor issues” post!), Professor Zero, the Civil War History Bookshelf, and Ortho at Baudrillards’ Bastard, whose readers have been having a great discussion sparked in part by Play PhD Casino!
